Sweat and tears are a given, but there was definitely no blood involved in the birth of Grater Goods; Christchurch's standout vegan deli and bistro. Found in an old glass factory in Sydenham’s industrial blocks, a fifth-generation ‘butcher’ and long-term vegan Flip Grater runs the place alongside her husband Youssef Iskrane.

What started as a hole-in-the-wall sandwich bar has grown into a fully-fledged café by day and licensed bistro restaurant by night. Furnished with mismatched vintage tables and chairs and comfy couches, Grater Goods have crafted a space that exudes creativity and style, a haunt for bourgeois bohemians if you will.

Working towards keeping this planet habitable for future generations is the core ethos of Grater Goods. The mission is to introduce more people to vegan products, and in no way exclude meat-eaters. If anything, they invite everyone to eat more sustainably and embrace the philosophy of Flexitarianism. Digging into the exceptionally tasty vegan meats created here will have even the most stubborn carnivore question their principles.

On top of the extensive list of vegan meats, the evening menu feature delights such as beetroot tartare and a selection of rotating specials. Drawing on influences from European cuisine as well as South America and Asia, dishes are delivered with flair and excellence. You’ll find a unique array of vegan cheeses to get to know– anything from crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth parmesan to fresh mozzarella and smoky cheddar. Top these up with pesto, mushroom pate or faux gras from the deli and your taste buds will rejoice.

If you’ve not got time to dine, Grater Goods have everything you can possibly need for a vegan antipasti platter or picnic at your fingertips. Imagine a sort of mini Mediterranean Foods for vegans (except you can order a glass of wine and browse). Keep your eyes peeled on Grater Goods social for updates on all that’s on offer including live music gigs. Trust us, it's a place you want to stay in step with.
