Down a cute laneway off Joll Road in Havelock North, a treasure trove of eateries can be found, including Piku, the only Izakaya-style Japanese restaurant and cocktail bar in Hawke’s Bay.

What first began as a pop-up at a local vineyard has grown into a thriving and bustling permanent space. It pays to book ahead as, quite often, the main dining room books out weeks in advance. If you are a more spontaneous diner, though, you can try your luck and see if there’s a spare spot in the cocktail bar area, or on a nice day, head out to the courtyard.

In Japan, an Izakaya is an informal bar that serves small plates and is popular for after-work drinks. At Piku, owner and chef Ben has taken the Izakaya concept and turned up the volume with an elevated twist. Both the dining area and cocktail bar are sophisticated spaces, with nods to the Japanese influence in the decor. There’s a buzz in the air dining here, and it’s no surprise that they have taken out the ‘Outstanding People’s Choice’ gong at the Hawke’s Bay Hospitality Awards for two years running.

Largely responsible for these awards is the incredible food being served at Piku. The menu is designed as a two-course situation, and all the food comes as sharing plates. Some of the most popular dishes include the spicy KO knock-out chicken, wagyu meatballs, a platter of sashimi and the famous volcano sushi roll. But with a menu as good as Piku’s, there isn’t a wrong choice!

To complement these delicious plates, the drinks game is just as strong, with plenty of local beer and wines on the menu, and even their own house Yuzu gin - made using locally grown fruit. As the only cocktail bar in Havelock, they specialise in a range of specialty and classic cocktails. Or leave things completely up to chance and trust the bartender by ordering the ‘leap of faith’ option. Who knows, you might just discover your new favourite drink!

Piku is the ultimate dining experience in Havelock North.  Whether you want to celebrate a special occasion or just want a fun night out with a close group of friends, it’s the place to head to.
