Petone’s myriad side streets hold plenty of delightful surprises, and if you’re lucky enough, you might just stumble upon the House of Good Fortune.

The spiritual home of Good Fortune Coffee Co., the beautifully rejuvenated villa prides itself on keeping ‘an open door to everyone’, from politicians to plumbers and everyone in between. Located down Fitzherbert Street, you can’t miss the place, with its mint-green weatherboards and rich burgundy roof bringing a welcome splash of colour against its more industrial neighbours.

Step inside and you’re greeted with an array of quirky artwork and knick-knacks adorning the walls, in that distinct look and feel of Good Fortune Coffee’s other outfits, such as sister cafe Miss Fortune’s and the Petone institution that is Seashore Cabaret. With the roaster spinning away tirelessly against the soundtrack of good, wholesome banter, it’s the perfect environment for mingling and enjoying some of the neighbourhood’s finest brews and snacks.

Food-wise, you’re more than looked after by the cafe’s cornucopia-like cabinet, featuring sweet and savoury home-baked goods that cater to all dietary requirements. Keep an eye out for the cakes, which range from petite and garnished with flowers to generous and smothered with icing. The pies are hearty, and there’s a big focus on vegetarian and vegan fare. A small, ever-changing blackboard menu keeps things fresh, staying true to the Good Fortune ethos that no two days should be the same.

Much of Petone’s character comes from its hidden side streets and the unique vibes brought by their inhabitants. The House of Good Fortune is a fine example.
