Unmistakably eye-catching, Escape Coffee Roasters takes pride of place on the corner of New Plymouth’s Liardet Street. Local graffiti artist Milarky has metamorphized the building’s exterior into an impressive public artwork featuring an old-school scuba diver (and a couple of cheeky crustaceans).

The interior is open, almost cavernous, and gloriously pungent with the smell of their freshly ground coffee. Escape Coffee Roasters started in 2011, with the purpose of roasting coffee that puts the planet, people and quality before profit. The flagship café is a physical manifestation of the brand and what they represent; laidback, cool and functional. Escape Coffee Roasters invite people to find a seat, sip on their coffee and stay awhile.

The simple wooden tables and chairs, vintage couches, giant graffiti pieces and monstera plants are meticulously strewn around to create a sort of artist's garage hangout. The beats flow, the people come and for the more adventurous, a sizeable skateboarding bowl is available to use at their pleasure (or peril depending on your skills).

Coffee is made to perfection every time and is served in an assortment of bespoke ceramic creations. With thoughtful touches like this and razor-sharp consistency, it is easy to understand why people flock here;  a hub for people to come and take some time out and slow down. It’s also a place to pick up Escape Coffee beans and coffee paraphernalia for home, but we reckon you should sit down and well, escape for a bit.
