Creatives of Canterbury rejoice—York Street Gallery of Fine Art in Timaru is here to satisfy your art cravings. Whether you’re an avid collector or a casual appreciator, this eclectic spot is the perfect start to a slow Saturday.

It’s no surprise the gallery evokes a distinct point of view, given the founder is sculpturist Debbie Tempelton-Page. She initially stumbled upon the space when attending a workshop and ended up making it her own.

An ever-rotating selection of pieces adorns the walls, so there’s always something new to discover. As far as wall art goes, you’ll want to take your time to peruse the big Kiwi names on display. You might be taken by Nigel Brown's whimsical pieces or Mike Glover's ethereal landscapes.

After scouting out the gallery, your next stop is the rather enchanting patio out the back. Brimming with large-scale garden features and sculptures, it’s like stepping into another world. Explore three-dimensional works such as Martin Cole’s metal interpretations of nature or Nachiko Schollum’s curious ceramics.

The down-to-earth attitude of the gallery has much to do with Debbie and her inclusive approach to sharing creativity and passion. She is the kind of person who will offer you a cup of tea and indulge any of your questions about art. If that’s not enough, we can't forget to mention that a couple of cuddle-worthy Griffon dogs will also greet you at the door. Sold? Okay, we’ll see you there.

York Street Gallery is currently open on Friday and Saturday, but you’re more than welcome to shop by appointment with Debbie. Simply get in touch with her to arrange it.
