Couture is a word most often associated with high-end fashion, but down Wānaka’s sleek laneway, The Precinct, you will find a window displaying Alice Herald’s ‘diamond couture.’ Unique, bold pieces from this luxury jewellery studio gleam back at wide eyes.

Alice’s studies of sculpture at an art institute in Mexico during her gap year travels ignited her love for jewellery, “the miniature form of sculpture.” Then came an honours degree in jewellery design from the University of the Arts London, followed by even more impressive additions to the résumé such as working alongside goldsmiths to the British royal family and showing work at London Fashion Week. However, the allure of the mountains over monarchy won out in 2005, and Alice made Wānaka her home.

Just over a decade later, with further industry knowledge garnered through eight years as Head Designer of an international online engagement ring company (that she co-founded), Alice created her own label, Herald. Using only ethically mined, 18-carat Aotearoa and Australian gold and platinum and responsibly sourced precious gemstones, the jewellery that comes out of Alice’s studio is thoughtful and unique, and not just in a material sense. Alice works one-on-one with clients to design and craft something for them that captures a personal story and will be treasured for a lifetime.

Alice creates predominantly bespoke pieces but also jewellery collections, all made with the finest materials and exquisite craftsmanship. Drop by the open studio or make an appointment to start the journey to your one-of-a-kind jewel.
