A Sunday Roast at Welles Street Christchurch.

Welles Street

44 Welles Street, Christchurch Central
Christchurch & Canterbury

Taking the Sunday roast to the next level, Welles Street is all about giving the classic dish a proper twist. Crafted from local ingredients, the entire meal here changes weekly depending on seasonal offerings, think a tied rolled roasted pork filled with a Georgian rub (including spices like fenugreek, coriander, chilli and bee pollen) served with charred pumpkin puree, marinated chickpeas and cauliflower, and burnt chilli butter. Bring the family, bring your mates (the four-legged ones too), grab a beer and indulge on a warming roast on a Sunday evening. Is there a better way to wrap up the week?

A Sunday Roast at Pomeroys Christchurch.

Pomeroy's Old Brewery Inn

292 Kilmore Street, Christchurch Central
Christchurch & Canterbury

If you’re after an authentic pub experience and a classic Sunday roast accompanied with great craft beer, look no further. Pomeroy’s will serve you a roast just like your mum would’ve made back in the day. Expect a serving of free-range pork topped with crackling, carrot and parsnip mash, peas and broccoli with mouth-watering cheese sauce, and let’s not forget the special guest of this party, gravy.

With cosy booths, a beautiful restaurant space and snuggly private corners, it will be easy to find a spot that’s perfect for you. The atmosphere inside this historical building just can’t be replicated; it’s a spot that’s pure perfection for a relaxed Sunday lunch.

A Sunday Roast at Pegasus Arms Christchurch.

Pegasus Arms

14 Oxford Terrace

A long-term Christchurch institution, Pegasus Arms has been carving out the same roast for years. It’s a classic, and why would you go and change something that is just so darn delicious?

Take your pick of beef, lamb or chicken, all served with perfectly roasted spuds, carrots, parsnip and broccoli, plus that icing on the cake of a Yorkshire pudding. Rip into the pudding, dip into the gravy, sip that perfect glass of red and let yourself take in all that comfort of a fine Sunday roast in a cosy atmosphere. The roast here is so popular, the kitchen team are planning to make it a daily dish.

A Sunday Roast at Blue Smoke Christchurch.

Blue Smoke

3 Garlands Road, Woolston
Christchurch & Canterbury

The Sunday Sit Down at Blue Smoke is a whole new take on how to spend a laidback Sunday afternoon. So much more than a place to fill your belly with a delicious roast (although there’s that too), this is a spot where hours can easily pass as you enjoy the folk club style mood with live music on a koha entry, take in the warmth of the community vibe and indulge in soul warming food.

The roast here is served in the beautiful AGA kitchen in a self-service style so you can pick and choose or just have it all. Designed from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, the offerings vary from week to week. Bring the family, settle in for the afternoon and leave feeling nourished in so many ways.

A Sunday Roast at Pedro's House of Lamb Christchurch.

Pedro's House of Lamb

290 Colombo Street & 17 Papanui Road

Pedro’s was the first Spanish restaurant in town back in the 1980s and lamb shoulder quickly became their signature dish. After losing their restaurant in the earthquakes, Pedro’s moved into a container and became Pedro’s House of Lamb choosing to cook that one dish, and cook it well. And boy, do they. They’ve been able to tap into the export market of New Zealand lamb (the best stuff we usually have to travel overseas to enjoy), cook it in the Spanish way and serve it with scalloped potatoes. The meat is so tender it’s literally falling off the bone.

A decent sized serving designed to take home to feed up to three mouths, this is a very handy way to provide your loved ones with a hearty roast be it Sunday or any other day of the week.
