Inconspicuously nestled amongst the hum of Dominion Road in Auckland is Folds Patisserie, an Asian-inspired bakery seamlessly blending flavours from South East Asia with New Zealand. Folds is friendly and inviting, offering a calming green and white aesthetic and a cabinet filled with an exciting array of colourful sweet treats.

Starting out as a side hustle in 2020, Folds Patisserie was founded by Wendy Lau. She’s been a baker since she was young and even studying architecture couldn’t keep her away from her true passion. Originally, Folds was online only with a focus on made to order cakes and taste boxes, as Wendy took the opportunity to work out what customers wanted and to experiment with flavours from her childhood. Most commonly, flavours are drawn from Brunei, Singapore and Malaysia, including pandan, taro and durian to name just a few.

These days Folds Patisserie may have found its permanent home in Mount Eden, but there is still an emphasis on keeping it creative. Playing with flavour combinations that showcase South East Asia, yet making them accessible and accepted by those foreign to the culture is a real passion of Wendy’s, and bringing the two cultures closer remains an active goal. Another fun way to fill the cafe’s calendar is with the hosting of high tea events, offering an assortment of both sweet and savoury goodies.

The most nostalgic of dishes regularly available at Folds are the ondeh ondeh and the pandan lamingtons, however other popular choices include the milo swiss rolls, kaya croissants and Portugese egg tarts. Large made to order cakes remain on the menu, as does the option for event catering. Regardless of how many bellies there are to fill, Folds Patisserie does an excellent job of keeping them happy.
