Owned by baking extraordinaire, Kim Evans, Little & Friday is the classic case of ‘less is more’. Housed in an old butcher’s shop, Little & Friday started out as everything its name suggests: little and only open on Fridays. Kim and her daughter Holly started the business offering all sorts of baked goodies, and people quickly came flocking for Little & Friday’s brioche loaves and their now famous doughnuts.

Since then things have grown, somewhat. Kim and her team have taken over the entire block of shops and now offer more space for Little & Friday’s huge gaggle of regulars. Needless to say the size of their kitchen has grown substantially too. There is also a garden out the back from which much of the café’s produce is gathered, and a wood fired pizza oven now proudly forms part of this talented team’s kitchen armory.

With more space has come a growth in Little & Friday’s food offerings, too. They now cater for every meal of the day, offering menu items at breakfast and dinner in addition to their lineup of baked goodies that still features many of the original favourites. The food is strongly underpinned by Kim’s values: it’s good for you, it’s good for the environment and it’s made from scratch.

Staying true to its humble roots, the café’s fit out demonstrates a real emphasis on resourcefulness. Milk and beer crates make perfect tables and seats, and mismatched crockery is the perfect thing from which to eat one of Little & Friday’s beautiful signature tarts or cakes. Service is provided by a whole heap of hipster kids, and the coffee is great.

It might no longer be little, but thank goodness Little and Friday is now open more than one day a week.
