Paris Syndrome is a well-documented psychological condition, a state of extreme shock experienced by tourists who arrive in the city only to realise it was not what they had dreamed it to be. But there’s a café/wine bar on Sandringham Road that may soothe the Paris Syndrome sufferer.

Petit Bocal is open from 7am, seven days a week, serving Supreme Coffee, fresh pastries and delicious smoothies (the summertime smoothie is sure to make you smile - crusted with hundreds and thousands like a martini). This French inspired café is well known for the little cute foam animals and smileys they fashion on their lattes and hot chocolates.

Breakfast is available from 7am to 3pm, lunch from 12 to 5pm and sharing plates, mains and ‘plats du jour’ are on offer from 5.30pm onwards, Monday to Friday. There is a range of wines from both France and New Zealand available, and with the café’s intimate, cosy setting, Petit Bocal is the perfect spot to woo a date.

A large shared table in the middle and a dozen smaller, intimate tables make the small space vibrant and lively in true European style. Despite the glimpse of Mt Eden through the window, it would be easy to mistake this crowded café on Sandringham road for a corner of Ax en Provence with the sounds and smells, delicious food, coffee, wine and close cosy tables garnished with flowers. They’ve managed to avoid all of the cliches that so often come with the words -French-café-pastry. Petit Bocal is for want of a better word, ‘darling’, and you’ll be sure to take your darlings here.
