Serving “mellow food which not only fills your belly but also fills your heart with contentment and joy”, the Portland Public House has been providing the good people of Kingsland with kai and entertainment since 2012. Under new ownership, the spot has recently undergone a rebrand, but retains much of the warm, cosy, welcoming atmosphere that earned its reputation as a local classic.

All food is sourced locally; meat and poultry free farmed, free range and sourced from Grey Lynn butchers, and their produce comes from the neighbouring fruit and vege shop in Kingsland. Portland is particularly famous for their live gigs, with musicians taking the stage most nights of the week, so keep an eye on their Facebook to see what’s happening.

The joint is reminiscent of that lumber-jacky, plaid shirt vibe you may expect to find in Oregon (tap beer even comes in a mason jar), and you’ll also find the Canadian classic ‘poutine’ on the menu - hand cut chips covered in cheese and gravy. Meals are reasonably priced, and their famous burgers have their own happy hour between 4-7pm Monday to Friday, available for the amazing price of $6. P

ortland’s the spot if you’re looking for a place with a lively atmosphere and some corners to hold a conversation- in the main bar area to hear the live music and boogie with your mates, on the patio out the back to spin all the yarns, or close and cosy in a little nook by the fireplace- there are also tables out the front to sip beer and watch the world go by. Great atmosphere, chill vibes and cheap food, we recommend Portland Public House for any occasion.
