It’s stunning, it’s iconic and it’s home to some of the greatest shows in Aotearoa. But the beautifully restored Isaac Theatre Royal has a lot more bubbling away under the surface than what might meet the eye.

From Lorde to comedy to orchestral masterpieces to community shows and Scooby Doo Live, the heritage theatre is a wearer of many hats and has something to please everyone. In addition to live shows, this entertainment hive is also home to the New Zealand International Film Festival and doubles as a much-utilised venue for weddings, dinners and conferences. Starting to lose track of those hats? There’s more to come – alongside the breathtaking triple-level auditorium, the Isaac Theatre Royal also houses the Gloucester Room, a space for fringe theatre performances, talks, workshops, private pre-show drinks, stand-up comedy and the popular Gloucester Session series.

As well as ticking the boxes when it comes to quality and quantity of performance, the theatre also goes above and beyond with the details when it comes to enhancing the ITR experience. Features such as the beautiful bar areas which open an hour before performances (perfect for a relaxing pre-show drink) and the option for visitors to book in to the Royal Supper Club for a platter and drink before the show make time spent here even more special. And speaking of special, being hosted in one of the theatre’s most exciting features – the two Royal Boxes – makes for a unique experience indeed – think bubbles, the royal treatment and the best seat in the house during pre-show and interval.

With a rich past dating back to 1863, the Isaac Theatre Royal has played an integral part in the cultural and creative history of the city and it’s fair to say the future is very bright for this Christchurch gem.
