The long, curved driveway that leads to Kate Sheppard House sets the tone for entering one very special place. The property was acquired by the government in 2019, and the museum opened its doors to the public in December 2020 after careful renovation of the historical villa. Just the setting in itself makes visiting the house worthwhile, but it’s the stories that can be discovered inside that really create a lasting impression. 

The museum visit is an immersive experience, with a guided tour much advised to get the most out of your visit. The passionate guides love sharing their knowledge of the woman who made history right here. If you prefer to wander through on your own, that’s of course possible as well – make sure to look inside drawers and take time to discover all the little hidden details that tell Kate’s story. There are plenty of interesting things to keep school-aged children amused too. 

While we all know the legacy of Kate Sheppard’s work, it’s here that you’ll really come to appreciate it by learning about the woman herself (who was a pioneer in many ways in her time) and the changes that have occurred in the world ever since. The aim of this museum is to work as a prompt for important discussions to keep happening around women’s rights, equality and social justice. A visit here is quite a different experience than visiting any other museum, it’s bound to leave an impression and make you think.
