A constant stream of customers follow their noses to Alligator, a tiny hole-in-the-wall style pizza store serving the largest pizza in town. This is a little piece of New York in the middle of Riccarton Road, where pizza is served by slice big enough to satisfy a grown man. There is also the option to take an entire pizza (measuring 60cm diameter) away, which will feed around four to six mouths or one very hungry hippo.

This one-man-band is run by owner-operator Brendan Pflaum, who makes the dough from scratch himself using a sourdough starter with a 12-24 hour ferment. He uses simple, classic flavours and quality ingredients to create these huge New York style pizzas that in style lean towards the Italian cultural side of the cosmopolitan city.

In true New York style, there’s drip coffee available all through the day, made from varying beans according to availability and the mood of the man behind the counter. Sip on a coffee, grab a New Yorker to flick through while you wait for your slice of cheesy goodness to arrive fresh from the oven, watch the buzz of busy people on this Riccarton main drag and you may just feel like you’re in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple.
