Housed in a beautifully restored 1877 building Gothic Revival style building within the Christchurch Arts Centre, there’s no denying that Bunsen seriously stands out from the crowd when it comes to setting and location.

Step inside and you’ll discover the offering, staff and fit-out all have that stand-out factor too. Serving up breakfast and lunch in what was formerly part of Canterbury University, Bunsen’s name is a look back at the early days of the building when the space was used for chemistry classes. On the food front, Bunsen offers an enticing brunch menu which moves from breakfasts such as brioche French toast and the Bunsen breakfast platter through to more substantial lunch items like burgers and nachos. There’s a kids menu here too, offering dishes that may make you wish you could wind back the clock such as the Kids Platter with fairy bread, cheese, fruit salad and yoghurt. If you’re after something smaller, the cabinet is brimming with goodies ready to provide lunch on the go or a little something to curb that sweet craving.

When it comes to coffee, you’re in safe hands – you can’t ask for much better than a café owned by a coffee company. Switch Espresso is Bunsen’s parent company and the Switch team have curated a special blend for Bunsen called Dark Horse. Bunsen does a great job of showing off this delicious roast for all things espresso based, and offer a wide range of filter coffee (including an impressive syphon brewer which fits in perfectly with the chemistry lab feel) using single origin light roast beans which change weekly.

Sit outside on the restored furniture and watch the world (and the tram) go by on Worcester Boulevard or take a seat inside and admire the beautiful heritage features such as the wooden mezzanine and beautiful wood lined ceiling. Bunsen is a little gem sitting amongst one of the city’s most treasured features and is well worth a visit for your next coffee, snack, meal or a glass of wine in the sunshine.
