Cook ‘N’ with Gas has been a Christchurch mainstay since 1999. This family owned restaurant, bar and lounge operates out of the same heritage building it was established in more than two decades ago. Many of the staff members have been working here for over ten years and patrons have continued to come back year after year. Consistency is a theme here and it makes for a dining experience you won’t soon forget.

The building once served as lodging for Christchurch Boys High principals and this gives the restaurant a welcoming, familiar feel. Diners enter through the solid, antique threshold and find themselves taking a step back in time. Vintage photographs of New Zealand icons, plate glass windows and wooden trim from the1800s all give a nod to days gone by.

The menu complements the atmosphere and features French cuisine with a Kiwi flare. Nearly everything (think breads, sauces, gravies, compotes and more) are all made in house with local ingredients. The pilsner steamed mussels have been on the menu for sixteen years straight and true to form, the plate combines classic kai with French accents. Green lipped mussels come glazed under gruyere with belly bacon and swiss chard.

The pan seared market fish is a popular main and comes served with grilled prawns, potato salad, asparagus and sweet potato ruille. The ‘Beef a la gas’ menu item features a carved sirloin with mozzarella, cream gratin, baby beets, beans and jus. It’ll fill you right up but have you coming back a week later. To round out your meal order a glass of New Zealand wine from the extensive wine list or opt for a craft beer. The full bar has it all.

If you simply can’t decide, opt for the tasting menu which allows you to try a bit of everything at an attractive price point, just $60 per head.

At the back of the restaurant you’ll find Astro Lounge - a tranquil, dimly lit beer garden with specialty cocktails and a menu of its own. Science fiction references can be found throughout the menu, a result of many of the staff members’ appreciation for Star Trek, Star Wars and the genre as a whole.

Live music plays often at Astro Lounge, plenty of craft beers are on tap and cocktails like the Gasoline P3 (peach schnapps, Pimms no. 1 cup and pineapple juice) delight drinkers regularly. The Universal platter offers a bit of every starter imaginable with olives, pork belly, fried chicken, potato skins, fries, jalapeno poppers, fish and chips, salads and  salt pepper squid all gracing the plate. The burgers are also long time favourites. It’s the perfect spot for drinks with friends

Whether you choose Cook ‘N’ with Gas or Astro Lounge (or both) you’re in for delicious fare, top quality drinks and hospitality that has defined itself year after year since the last century.
