For a first foray into café ownership, Chris Penny’s ‘Hello Sunday’ is done exceptionally well. After spending some time travelling around Europe getting inspired by bars, cafés and restaurants and learning as much as he could about food scenes and trends, he returned to Christchurch to set about starting his own, and his effort can be seen well reflected in what Chris has created.

The café’s interior is reminiscent of an old country church- complete with its antique pews, and great effort has been taken to keep the original charm of the building, which originally started life as a post office in the centre of town back in 1870 (or thereabouts).

The café’s real claim to fame, however, is it’s food: catering for all dietary requirements (including vegan), all the food is made from scratch using fresh locally sourced and (where possible) organic produce. The baked goods are made daily and include delicious muffins, scones, pies, cakes and slice.

Hello Sunday is co-owned by Yasmine and Jonathan from the wellness centre next door, and there is an evident cross over of influence – they try to encourage a similar ethos within their café staff and their approach to customer service, so you will always feel welcome here. And you don’t have to worry about missing out on a table as there is a ton of space inside, as well as seating both on the verandah and in the backyard.
