Ice Cream Charlie

91/111 Armagh Street, Christchurch Central, Christchurch

Walk on down to Victoria Square on any sunny day and you’ll find a line of people patiently waiting for their turn in front of the iconic pink and white vanilla ice truck that is Ice Cream Charlie. If you’ve ever tasted their ice cream, you’ll know joining that queue is well worth it.

The ice cream here is hand made by owner-operator Katey Lane, with a new batch churned out every second day. You can choose from a variety of toppings from the Classic Charlie, the creamy vanilla ice topped with delicious raspberry sauce, to newer topping additions such as kiwi fruit.

A true Christchurch institution, Ice Cream Charlie has been around since 1903 and to this day serves vanilla ice by the very same recipe that was developed way back then. The cart it serves from today has been in use since the 1950s, and along with the ice cream, carries with it a mountain of nostalgia for generations of Christchurch people. Stopping by Ice Cream Charlie for many is a way to revisit their precious childhood memories.

It’s all about happy people and family treats at Ice Cream Charlie– even your fur baby has been thought of, with a free cone offered for each pooch that comes along to truck. With the backdrop of the beautifully restored Victoria Square, the Avon River flowing by and the tram rolling past every now and then, a visit to Ice Cream Charlie is one that will certainly continue to create those memories that last for generations to come.
