In amongst the surrounds of St Asaph Street East, you’ll find the lovely Kadett Café. Run by husband and wife team, Mirabel and Gareth, Kadett serves up light lunches, coffee, tea and matcha (aka green tea) lattes in a light, airy and ever-evolving space.

The idea of starting a café came to Mirabel and Gareth in 2009 whilst they were working in Japan teaching English. After spending two years looking for the perfect place in Christchurch, they came across The Space Academy, a multi-use space that hosts talks, exhibitions, events, a growing reference library and even a pint-sized hair salon.

With the help of their new Space Academy friends and collaborators, they set about building the café. From the counter and tables to cushions and even the plates you eat from, everything has been built with care and by hand. A lot of time and love has gone into this space, in fact a whole year of it.

The space itself is influenced by Japanese and Scandinavian design, and a lot of work has gone into making Kadett a calming and zen place in amongst the busy and industrial-style cafés of Christchurch.

The food at Kadett will change regularly over the seasons. The menu features Grizzly Bagel and Cakes by Anna, a good base to start from, and the idea is to keep the menu simple, having a few good options made using quality ingredients. Spreads and jams are made by Mirabel and there are specialist Japanese teas on the menu, along with locally roasted coffee by Ristretto.

Co-collaborators of the space, Richard (landlord and mastermind of the academy) and Hamish, take over from the Kadett Café at the stroke of 4pm when it turns into The Space Academy Bar serving wine, beer and platters into the evening.

With plans for art exhibitions, artist talks and book launches, don’t expect this inspired café to stand still for very long.
