Occupying the ground floor of the Centre of Contemporary Art sits Lux Espresso, a café that exists to provide top quality (Allpress) coffee, breakfast and lunch to nearby city dwellers, tourists and, of course, gallery-goers.
There’s a close partnership with Allpress here, which is evident in the fit out, design and food offerings. Run by Jenny and Sung Park who have a wealth of hospitality knowledge and experience, Lux embraces simplicity. In an era where some cafés are trying to be everything to everyone, this café is sticking to the basics. There isn’t a menu, instead just a great cabinet of healthy and contemporary food. The cold brew is robust and consistently delicious. If coffee isn’t your thing, try one of their healthy juices. After perusing the latest exhibition at CoCA, sit back and enjoy one of their sandwiches or a slice of savoury loaf.
One of the great things about this place is that there’s no pressure to eat and run. Instead, customers are encouraged to stay as long as they like in the space, chatting with staff, reading the newspaper or simply mulling over the works in the adjoining gallery.
The inclusive gallery-cafe space is modern, sunny, warm and a fitting partnership between the contemporary art gallery and one of New Zealand’s most recognisable coffee brands.
