Inhabiting a refurbished warehouse on Cashel Street between Fitzgerald and Barbadoes, The Corner Store brings artists, community space and the best barbeque in town inside the four avenues. The two-storey building has seen a transformation from graffiti laden abandonment to an immaculate white construction that stands proud along a busy street, impossible to be missed when passing by.

The upstairs space houses fifteen working artists in a shared studio environment, while the downstairs multi-use space works as a gallery with fortnightly changing exhibitions, cafe, restaurant, bar, yoga studio, function room– the possibilities here are endless and that’s exactly how it’s intended. The Corner Store also hosts workshops and is available for hire for private or corporate functions.

A little cafe nestled in the hole-in-the-wall front shop space serves The Sailors Son coffee crafted with passion on weekday mornings. Served in vintage or take away cups to your liking, making an order here is as easy as popping your head through the window. Become a regular, and they’ll be slinging your coffee out the window faster than you can say flat white. Don’t forget to take a step back to marvel at the interesting architectural features of this unique building or walk on in to take a look at the art hanging on the gallery walls.

At the back of the building lies a cosy courtyard where the barbeque magic happens. This is home to Smokey T’s, the materialised dream of chef Tristin Anderson. Here authentic wood smoked bbq is produced and served in a street fare manner by the man himself. Expect the softest, juiciest slow cooked meat you have ever tasted. We’re talking pulled pork that’s sat in the smoker for twelve hours, brisket cooked to perfection in ten hours, pork belly, jerked chicken, burgers, tacos, you get the gist. It’s no wonder that Smokey T’s already has a cult following with people making a special trip here from far and wide.

The Corner Store has a simple, yet ambitious aim: to bring people together in a friendly, unpretentious environment to enjoy art, culture and good food. This is a destination where it’s easy to come and hang out in a community vibe, watch the bbq master at work while having a beer with some mates, chat to people from different walks of life and peer at ever changing art on the walls. You may enter The Corner Store as a guest, but you’ll leave as part of the wider whānau.
