A humble master of craft beer, Sprig & Fern is one of the most awarded breweries in the country. Not one to blow its own trumpet, the multi-award winning Nelson based brewery produces consistent quality, 100% natural, unpasteurised craft beers and ciders that many of us in Christchurch are not that familiar with. Luckily for us, the Sprig & Fern Merivale Tavern can fix that.

Eighteen taps run here continuously with the extended range of Sprig & Fern brews: a number of Pilsners, APA’s, IPA’s and an easy drinking Lager, plus a couple of ciders, a grown-up-lemonade and monthly changing rotational taps, including a nitro-based tap. The best way to sample a selection of these fine brews is by going for a tasting tray, or simply by asking the friendly staff for a sample before ordering a full pint (which by the way is a true imperial pint size of 568ml!).

The tavern has been thoughtfully redecorated by owners Michelle Johnstone and Chris McNay, who took the reins here in 2018. On top of major works such as creating new booths and a huge deck that basks in the afternoon sun, subtle additions, such as heavy velvet curtains and timeless art works add to the charisma and comfort of the pub.

Sprig & Fern is your friendly local pub where the beer is great and good banter essential. It’s a spot where you can bring the whole family, (including your well-behaved canine friend!) enjoy proper pub food and the company of good friends. Gather a group and take part in the weekly quiz night, pop in for a cheap-as-chips pint during happy hour on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, or a hearty roast on a Sunday. Whatever the occasion, the friendly folk at Sprig & Fern will make you and yours feel right at home.
