During escapades across America, Lisa and Richard Sinke, owners of Dux Group, were struck by a common theme threading throughout the restaurant landscape. Tavern on the Green, Tavern on the Park, Tavern over here, Tavern over there…there was something in that one word that stuck with the pair.

With two other Christchurch hospitality institutions, Dux Central and Dux Dine, already set in motion, Lisa and Richard decided to take on a third venture inspired by their international travels. Just like when mum and dad used to bring back pressies from their time away, Terrace Tavern is this couple’s worldly gift to Christchurch.

Located on the street level of The Terrace, this tavern is a refined day and night drinking and dining destination, worthy of any city’s main strip. It flexes seamlessly between a relaxed lunchtime spot in the sun, after work waterhole and an elegant dinner setting to a classy spectacle of late night cocktails accompanied by cool DJ beats.

No one likes being told what to do, let alone what to eat, so when it comes to ordering at Terrace Tavern, you are the master of your plate. The idea is to build your own smorgasbord of protein (be it from the earth, a nearby farm or plucked from the ocean) and customise it with an array of moreish appetisers and sides. The menu has a clever level of accessibility that allows hungry parties to either feast on shared plates or stick to a meal each (an excellent option on days when you don’t feel like fighting over the last oyster). The line-up of dishes is inviting and familiar, but seasoned with interesting culinary twists that elevate them from just another pub meal to something else altogether.

Though tavern in name, Terrace Tavern is far from the sticky and grimy drinking houses of its ancestors. Designed by Lisa herself, the interior encapsulates the building’s round exterior with the introduction of arched columns and mirrors, curved booths and bubbles of lighting. The blend of natural wood, grand leather, fresh botanical arrangements and bold block colours complements the food and drink offering beautifully and puts Terrace Tavern in a whole league of its own.
