Heading out of the city centre and into the suburbs, you’ll pass by many a corner store, visible from multiple approaches and stocked with essential items.  A place more akin to an art gallery, Mr Mod spreads around a sunny corner in the southern suburb of St Martins. It’s a trove of mid-century design.

Catch a glimpse of the vintage goods on offer through the crittall steel windows that wrap around the building; from slender timber side tables, interesting lamps and chandeliers to plush loungers, Mr Mod has an extensive range of pieces from eras of design excellence. A large roller door that serviced the workings of the automotive garage that was formerly on these premises, now allows Mr Mod’s furniture restoration workshop to spill out into the footpath-adjoining courtyard. Passers-by are rewarded with a glance at the meticulous attention to detail that goes into restoring their internationally sourced objects of design.

The original industrial concrete floor and exposed timber trusses inside the store further the theme of honest materiality that mid-century furniture is renowned for. Meandering around the various living room and dining room sets, the extent of the thoughtful curation is evident, right down to the choice of side lamps and butter knives. As is the case in many galleries, each item has a written story accompanying it. A penned tag describes the object’s history – the designer/maker, era, materiality and so on. This personal touch makes you feel as though by taking something home with you you’d be continuing a legacy.

Brimming with beautiful objects both collectable and functional, Mr Mod is a one-of-a-kind experience as well as an exhibitor. Pop into the store or check out their website to see what stories are waiting to be continued.
