On an otherwise non-descript street in inner Christchurch, Grain provide a wholesome offering amongst a collective of industrial traders. Owned and operated by a Christchurch couple, the young duo are no strangers to the hospitality scene with over 14 years experience in the coffee industry.

Allpress are the beans of choice for your caffeine fix, while Greenroots juices stack the cold drink shelf, together with some Karma Cola favourites. Generous sandwiches and servings of salad are all made in-house and change daily, so even frequent visitors can have something different for lunch each time they eat. Free range meat, quality cheese and Le Panier bread mean the sandwich options are worth coming for alone; however salad eaters will find equal happiness in the wholesome homemade ‘grain bowls’, plus the curated seasonal menu.

If you’ve got room for a midday dessert, dark chocolate and sea salt cookies are the customers' pick, alongside the ever-changing sweet selection. Also you’ll need to be in early to grab a ‘fast-becoming famous’ cheese scone. From the liquid menu choose either green berry, banana berry or a nostalgic peanut butter and jelly inspired smoothie.

Based within the Qb Studios building, Grain’s regulars return for the delicious food, friendly hosts and the relaxed environment, inclusive of four or five tables. Paying homage to its earlier industrial days as the Fort Rubber Moulding factory, Grain’s interior is a mixture of clean whites and exposed brick, with the huge red gantry still hanging from the ceiling.
