Situated on Lower Stuart Street to the east of the Octagon, Morning Magpie has gained a reputation for their ridiculously good coffee, food and organic juices. With beans supplied by Flight Coffee, you can choose from espresso, cold-drip and pour-over favourites that are a must-have for the coffee connoisseur. Sunny, bright and cosy, a visit to the Magpie is likely to make your day.
After the earthquakes 21 year old Troy Butler averted his path from art school in Christchurch to the craft of good coffee in Dunedin and hasn’t looked back since. His café is also a proud supporter of the arts, with rotating art exhibitions on display, art show openings and other events hosted in the space from time to time too. John, the wrinkly Shar Pei, is the café's mascot and will likely be lounging around when you visit.
So grab a coffee, give John a pat and don't miss Morning Magpie's tasty food offerings like the reuben which features corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss, pickles and mustard, organic sourdough and crisps. Polish the meal off with the Magpie's famous cinnamon pinwheel or any of their other homemade baked goods like the manuka honey, pistachio and thyme carrot cake.
Hours could slide by in the friendly, relaxed, well-considered aesthetic of the space; with friends, on a date, with homework, or your favourite book.
