Walk through a pair of bright pink gates on the main street of Motueka to discover a secret garden that is Bloom Café. Tucked away behind an old church in a building that once was a Sunday school, which owner-operators Yara Hunt & Aaron Banks have cleverly transformed into a bright and colourful space, Bloom is a very special café indeed.

In line with its name, the lovely courtyard is filled with blooms of all types, mature trees that offer shelter from the sun, and vibrant murals by local artists which add to that unique feel of an urban sanctuary. Inside a refreshing colour scheme, more art, and greenery seamlessly continue the theme and atmosphere.

Coffee is served in cute vintage cups and throw-away take out cups are nowhere on sight, instead customers can borrow a ceramic cup from the mug library or bring in their own vessel of choice for the on-the-run-coffee. This is just one way in which Bloom is committed to sustainability, it also sources everything for its kitchen locally, knows where everything comes from, and supports local creatives by inviting them to sell and showcase their products at this Motueka spot.

Bloom offers an all day brunch and lunch menu, but what a lot of people head here for is its famous pizzas. The pizzas, just like everything else prepared in the kitchen, are a true labour of love: everything that goes on them from dough to sauces are handmade onsite.

Whether you’re passing through town or staying for longer, make sure to pop in and appreciate this hidden gem.
