Ōamaru isn’t lacking when it comes to creative inspiration. The very earth upon which it’s built — that iconic white limestone — has given way to unique architecture and one-of-a-kind buildings over the years. Meanwhile, the rugged coastline is home to some of New Zealand’s most fascinating flora and fauna like the Korora Little Blue Penguin. We could go on but we don’t need to because local painters, sculptors, photographers and ceramicists draw upon the region’s many fascinating characteristics every day. You can see a wonderful sampling of their work at Crafted: Waitaki Artisan Gallery.
Situated in Ōamaru’s Heritage Precinct, Crafted lives within one of the carefully preserved Ōamaru stone buildings. Step inside, and you’ll be transfixed by the variety of mediums found here. While the techniques and subject matter vary widely, every piece is perfectly showcased by the natural light that streams in through the buildings’ skylights. Together these works form a colourful and masterful representation of this special region.
About fifteen different local artists display their work for all to enjoy at Crafted. As you explore you’ll find incredible examples of weaving, glasswork, sculpting, woodturning, basket making, painting, textile work, and so much more. Members of the collective man the gallery and can tell you more about the works themselves. Open seven days a week, the team at Crafted have created a welcoming art environment where you can browse at your own pace.
