As owners Karen and Murray put it, the wee cellar door at River-T Estate has the largest selection of Waitaki wines in the world. And while they’ve got a whole heap of award-winning wine for you to try, they’ve also got a laid-back energy that makes this spot fun for the whole family.

Karen and Murray planted these rows in 2007 and tended to the three-hectare vineyard until they decided to take a leap of faith. In 2018 they ‘cut a hole’ in the hedge and built the cellar door you’ll soon find yourself inside. Here you can taste River-T’s wines and other pours from around the region, get a platter and simply hangout. If you find a drop you love you’re in luck as River-T also sells their boutique wines by the bottle.

While Karen and Murray - grape growers through and through - entrust the River-T winemaking process to a team in Cromwell they have a deep understanding of all parts of the process. Chat to them about what’s pouring or snag a menu – these are also chock full of facts on this unique wine growing region. If wine isn’t your thing they’ve also got Scott’s local craft beer on tap and coffee, too.

Once you’ve decided on a tipple, pair it with any of River-T’s famous platters which showcase other artisan products of the Waitaki. These beautiful boards feature Whitestone cheese plus breads, dips, preserves, cured meats, chutneys and other notable nibbles. If you’ve brought the tots along they can tear into the ‘Ankle Biter’ platter and then burn off some energy exploring the vineyard’s rows.

River-T Estate has an easy going, country western feel which is reflected in the music, fitout and the untamed landscape that surrounds it. It’s one of the most laid back, come as you are tasting rooms you’ll find. So walk, bike or drive your way over and stay a while.
