Touted as an eclectic, cosy nook in the heart of beautiful Kurow, Wild Sage specialises in home-style kai and proudly serves delicious Common Ground coffee.

Originally from England, owner Jane has called Aotearoa home since the age of five and says it has always been a dream of hers to open a cafe. With a background in nursing and working as a chef, Jane has filled the cafe with all of the things she loves, such as her collection of funky art, indoor plants and the colour green. “I’m pretty wild”, she says, and acknowledges it has been a tight-knit team effort from NZ and abroad to develop everything into what it is today.

It’s without a doubt a friendly and warm environment, with the feel of a big living room managed by a small staff who are treated as family. Everything here is homemade, with lots of Kiwi classics including pies, the popular hot lamb sandwich, and of course, custard squares by Ani the baker, who assures us “they don’t last long here!”. Kurow has become a bit of a stopping point according to Jane, with cycle groups coming in regularly to take a load off and enjoy the relaxed setting.

Wild Sage also offers catering for evening meals, and can provide for different dietary and allergy requirements. What began as a chance to turn a dream into reality and create job opportunities in Kurow has become a favourite local establishment where locals and visitors alike can come to enjoy good company and good kai.
