A building with a past as colourful as the walls within, Gear Eatery and Bar is the latest reincarnation of the majestic Gear Homestead, perhaps one of Porirua’s most iconic landmarks.

Looking out across the splendid Porirua Harbour, the massive homestead, with its sprawling lawn, is a sight to behold. An ornate wrap-around porch welcomes visitors from all angles, while a new purpose-built deck soaks in the sun and provides customers with a spot to sit back and enjoy the outdoor music.

The traditional feel of the homestead’s exterior sits in stark contrast to the fitout inside. Pastel-coloured walls jostle for attention with the bright lampshades, which pepper the ceilings with bold bursts of colour. Stuffed animals watch on from every corner, and if you venture upstairs you’ll find a nautical-themed bar, complete with a boat and historic sea charts. There’s a lot going on, but in line with the eatery’s family-friendly approach, there’s certainly something to keep everyone occupied.

It’s a similar story with the food options available - whether you’re stopping by for brunch, lunch, or simply a catch-up drink accompanied by bar snacks, you’re sure to find something that meets your needs. The burger range, in particular, looks tempting, covering vegan, fish, and plenty of other choices. And of course, you’d do well to check out the onsite Italian pizzeria and ice-cream parlour too.

Throughout its storied past, the homestead has served as an arts centre, a school, and even the set for a Sir Peter Jackson film. Now a well-appointed eatery that will do Porirua proud, it stands in good stead to carry on a fine legacy.
