When you’re the ‘only’ one around, it’s easy to get complacent. But that’s just simply not the case at Industry, the only café located on the industrial side of Invercargill. Every aspect of this café from how it came to be, to its menus and service make Industry a top notch neighbourhood spot.

Owner-operator and brother sister duo, Mark and Kerry Heffer, hail from southern England originally but are now Southlanders through and through. As they say, “We moved from the southern tip of England to the southern tip of New Zealand and have put down quite a few roots here.” Mark trained as a chef for six years at Invercargill institution, The Batch, before purchasing Industry in 2018 from his mentors and friends there.

Industry is open five days a week, and the team prides themselves on their service and know many of their customers by name. This attitude creates a welcoming environment for everyone, and you’ll find folk in suits, work boots and everything in between.

Industry offers brunch and lunch menus Monday to Friday and keep things current with an ever evolving list of dishes that always include plenty of keto, vegan and gluten free options. Their kitchen even has a designated gluten free frier. Lunch dishes like beetroot fritters come served crispy with grilled halloumi, roasted red capsicum, industry coleslaw and herb aioli. For breakfast you can find a range of dishes from eggs benedict or ‘plain old eggs on toast’ to Industry-made bagels with cream cheese, fresh spinach, tomatoes, smashed avocado and bacon, salmon or vege. While the menu changes often, the team consistently delivers delicious fare and that’s what keeps everyone coming back.
