Clean and clinical doesn’t have to mean bare white walls and cold steel tables, and luckily for customers at Holyskin Tattoo, style doesn’t compromise hygiene at this busy little shop. Olive green walls are covered floor to ceiling with an array of quirky prints and artworks mostly owned by employee Alex, who collected them over the years from friends in the trade. Three black leather tables are where the magic happens, and word on the street is that these are often full, so if you’re desperate to get a new bit of ink while you’re in Wanaka, you best book in advance. If you’re wanting to take your chances though, or the tattoo is a spontaneous decision, then some days are kept aside by the staff purely for ‘walk-ins’, meaning depending on your timing, you might just be in luck.
Careful to keep a super friendly and welcoming vibe, Nathan the now owner says it’s important no-one feels intimidated coming in and instead they should feel right at home amongst a professional group who do it all for the love of tattoos. The staff obviously walk the talk too and some are covered chin to toe in an amazing array of inky images. One employee (and past owner to be precise) Goldy, also offers the niche art of hand poked tattoos, which is exactly what it sounds like – ink poked into the skin. Guest artists also make frequent appearances, creating a humming collaborative art scene that is hard to beat anywhere else in the town, and for a small scale studio, Holyskin Tattoos punches well above its weight.
