Tucked amongst Albert Town suburbia, Double Black is a neighbourhood café through and through. Named for the expert ski routes that only the bravest skiers would contemplate, Double Black is a play on both owner Jill’s favourite winter pastime and the amount of caffeine shots generally needed to get people through the day.

Underground Coffee and Noble & Savage users, Double Black also has a rocking menu for hungry visitors with generous meals like Original Hash, Eggs Benny and the deconstructed Super Bowl. Plenty of dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan options mean no-one misses out either, and whether you’re hitting the slopes, the mountains or the lake after, Double Black ensures you walk out the door fuelled for adventure.

Popular as a local respite for when Wanaka central hits its busy season, this café once sat by itself before neighbouring houses were built. Busy with tradies in the early days, Jill was able to change a few minds when it came to pies being the only option for lunch and now the hungry workers who visit are more than happy to tuck into a filled bagel, hearty pastry or big slabs of sweet slices.

There’s plenty of small humans who add playful energy to this café (likely due to the preschool that exists right next door), and the sandpit and box of toys make sure they’re well entertained while they’re here.
