Little Black Caravan

It’s handy to know what to expect when you’re turning up somewhere new, and the clue is all in the name at Little Black Caravan. A pint-sized coffee stop in the backblocks of Wanaka, this café may have wheels but that doesn’t mean it’s going anywhere. Parked up next to some local breweries, this has become the neighbourhood spot for those wanting some caffeine and lunch without the hassle of heading into town.

Formerly based in Wellington, these folks have retained a little of the capital in Wanaka by offering Peoples coffee, and in a beautiful display of synchronicity their sourdough bread comes from local maker The People’s Bread. Thick slabs of this are used for their hot toasties - ham, breaky, zesty or vege and make for the perfect picnic addition or quick working lunch. Organic, vegan sweet treats are the other menu items available so it’s pleasing to see that although surrounded by somewhat industrial neighbours, Little Black Caravan is unfaltering in its mission to bring you the best of the best when it comes to nutrition and flavour. Specialty hot chocolates made with Whittakers products are a favourite in the colder months, and when Wanaka hits sunshine season then the iced flat white should be your first drink of choice.

Having made the journey all the way from Levin, the caravan has had a full makeover - the clean, minimalist plywood interior all done by co-owner Alex who is a carpenter by trade. Sit out in the little shaded courtyard and soak up the atmosphere created by the easy-going smiley staff, or if you’re in a rush to get to your next port of call the fellas welcome text orders too - just call ahead on 027 8982522.
