Situated in beautiful grounds on the back blocks of the Wanaka township, Maude Tasting Room has a million-dollar view and the fantastic wines to go with it. The Mt Maude vineyard was planted in 1994 by now owner Sarah Kate’s parents, who thought retirement should involve something more fun and drinkable than sitting round playing scrabble. Thanks to their daughter and her Australian husband Dan, the vineyard and tasting rooms are now in very good hands. After a couple of ‘rockstar years’ making the good stuff over the Tasman, the duo returned to Central Otago country to work their magic here too. Renowned for their pinot noir, chardonnay and riesling, it would be rude not to taste test the efforts from the wine making family, and there really is no better place to do it than in the heart of Central Otago country where it all started.

Cosy up and tally a while in a space that is both a little bit glam and a little bit seductive, where sheepskin rugs cover the chairs, tea lights dot the tables and a fire crackles on the cooler days. Not forgetting you’re here for the wine of course, let the smart staff lead you through the tasting process, and because each bottle has a story, you should definitely let them regale you with stories of the vineyard while you’re at it.

If you’re feeling peckish after all that tasting, then grab one of the artfully arranged fromage or charcuterie boards, and if you’re impressed by that, then you best come back for dinner too – Maude doubles as the fine-dining restaurant Bistro Gentil by night.
