A Wanaka institution, Red Star has been filling hungry bellies with burgers for 13 years. With cranking music, a hearty menu of quality burgers, fries and drinks, friendly staff and an epic outdoor courtyard, it’s no wonder there’s demand for this burger restaurant to be open seven days a week.
Beef, chicken, lamb, venison, fish, vegetarian or breakfast style burgers, the choices are endless, and if you’re planning on going big, why not wash it all down with a real fruit smoothie or thick shake, plus a side of fries too? A liquor licence means you can also sip on a beverage whilst enjoying dinner or lunch, and every beer on offer is made locally in Wanaka. Non-alcoholic drinkers, however, should try out the locally made probiotic kefir drink by Revive.
Phone order or ordering via their own special app are popular ways to satiate the burger cravings, and well respected for their ease at cooking for gluten free customers, Red Star is happy to work around whatever dietary requirement necessary. If it’s a smaller meal you’re after, there’s the bambini, the same delicious ingredients in a mini bun. A specials board keeps things interesting, with a quirky burger appearing every fortnight or so – the recipe chosen by the crew in the kitchen.
Most of the burger ingredients come from next door at The Mediterranean Market, while Red Star craft the rest of their sauces, chutneys and patties in-house each day. Transparency and authenticity has always been important at Red Star and owner and operator Scott used to work for their wild venison supplier, so when it comes to knowing where your food comes from, this place takes the prize.
