A brewery come tasting room, this sunny spot in the backblocks of Wanaka has some serious hoppy goodness going on within its walls. Come between 4:00pm – 6:00pm for $1 off pints, or fill up the supplied riggers or your own vessel for takeaway beverages. Even better, book a tour for an hour long look around the machinery and hear about the magic that goes into making some of the finest beer in town. For $25 it’s a steal (and yes of course), you get to try some of the brews as well.

A multi-national operation, owners Jess and Simon hail from Australia and Oamaru respectively, while manager Sarah has come all the way from Philadelphia to help Rhyme and Reason take flight. A local designer invented the font that now graces the walls around the tasting room, while the macrocarpa interior was a combined effort between one of Simon’s mates and Jess’ dad.

With ten taps full flow at all times, this is obviously the place to come if it’s Rhyme and Reason beer you’re after, but keen supporters of other local brewers mean one to two guest taps are also a permanent fixture behind the bar. If you’re a true beer connoisseur, you may be lucky enough to visit while the seasonal frozen IPA is on offer. Not so much a beer slushie as a carefully frozen IPA with the ice then removed, resulting in the brew being stronger and smoother than its regular cousin.

The outdoor beer garden soaks in mid-afternoon sun, so if you’re after the prime time to visit, this would be it. Food trucks and other local mobile food joints often sit out front on the weekends, and keen to make this place feel like an ‘extension of your living room’,  the team don’t mind an inch if you bring in your own dinner, snacks or picnic (true story; they once had a family bring in their Sunday roast for dinner). They regularly host events too, and don’t discriminate when it comes to what activities are welcome here, from themed Oktoberfest, Halloween and Day of the Dead parties to weekly yoga on a Sunday.
