Walking into Boquita or ‘little mouth’, is like walking into a cosy kitchen space where, lucky for you, there’s room at the table for one more. The small collection of cacti on the counter, the colourful tablecloths and the rows of chipotle should leave you in no doubt you’re in Mexico country here.

A clever spin on Latin American’s favourite food though is that everything on offer is both vegan and gluten free, and even the milk for your coffee is plant based. Owner Lucas Putnam refers to the restaurant as the ‘clean-eating, veggie-loving little sister’ to his other popular eatery, La Boca Loca.

Simple and fresh, pick from tacos, salads, sides or sweets, and keep an eye out for new flavours or especiales written up on the paper menu behind the counter. Tacos are served on a hand-pressed organic corn tortilla and only setting you back $12 for two, it’s an easy choice for a cheap and cheerful lunch. Whet your whistle with locally made Six Barrel Soda, Good Buzz Kombucha or cold pressed juice from Havana Brothers Bakehouse to finish, and before you know it you’ve had a completely vegan meal that tastes miles better than any cold meat sandwich you were going to pack for lunch instead.

Boquita has set tongues wagging since the day it opened doors on Kent Terrace and with more and more people choosing a vegan lifestyle, it’s no wonder this place is pushed for space come lunch and dinner time. There's no need to take our word for it, simply follow the advice on the wall - ‘eat food, not too much, mostly tacos’.
