The kind of place where no judgement will be passed if you feel like drinking pisco sours at 11:30 in the morning, El Culo del Mundo is a laid-back bar and eatery that is reminiscent of those traveller-favourite hole-in-the-wall restaurants throughout Latin America.

Sixteen taps and one hand-pull showcase the latest from various craft breweries, and wines are mostly natural, but if you’re wanting to get the real Latin American experience, then a look at the cocktails menu is in order. From margaritas to micheladas, there’s no doubt the gentlemen behind the bar have put plenty of effort into making sure you get the most authentic cocktail possible, and they’re more than happy to chat to you at the bar while they work their magic.

The tapas-style menu is full of fun and slightly left-field dishes that you’d otherwise expect to find in fine-dining spots, but here they are simply part of the casual eating experience where you can surprise your mates by ordering the bone marrow, veal sweetbreads or ox tongue tacos. Feeling brave? El Culo del Mundo also has a few insect options - try nuts and bugs, or Otago grasshoppers with guacamole for a spin on the classic chips and dip. If you’re wanting to reserve here, you’re flat out of luck - this restaurant and bar does walk-ins only which adds to the spontaneous and easy-going feel, plus the big tables are made for sharing, so come prepared to find some new friends over dinner too.

Open till 3:00am (with an in-house DJ on the weekends), the bar bridges that gap between those who want to stay out late and dance their socks off, and those who simply like to settle in with a top rate crew and laugh the night away with tapas and cocktails.
