Step inside the compact interior of Kopitiam in the heart of Wellington CBD and you might expect a simple menu of snacks and perhaps a handful of takeaway drink options - but what the team here achieves in this modest space is simply incredible. The full offering of Singaporean-stye noodles and rice hawker meals plus a range of traditional Kopitiam (literally meaning ‘coffee shop’) food will blow you away, and the variety of drinks and sides on offer cements this place as one of the city’s best unique dining experiences.

It takes something really special to stand out from the crowd in a city renowned for such a high standard of dining and cuisine: perhaps it’s the friendly and attentive staff; the quick service; or maybe simply that the menu offers something different - done very well. Whatever it is, Kopitiam is certainly not one to be missed. You’ll want to try the traditional Kopi (margarine roasted coffee with condensed milk, served with a cracker on the side) and their famous Singapore laksa is rich, creamy and just a little bit spicy.

If you’re lucky enough to grab a table (this place gets seriously busy) you can sit back and enjoy the mellow ambience that fills the space while perusing the illustrations and informative artwork that adorns the dark walls, explaining the history and process of Kopi. Watch as your drinks are prepared right in front of you, soak up the natural light flooding in through the large windows at the entrance to the shop and marvel at the 10/10 presentation of everything set down in front of you; ready for sharing on the ‘gram or making your friends jealous.
