Back in 2011 when Lucas Putnam was working on the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, he came to the realisation that Wellington lacked authentic Mexican food using fresh, seasonal and ethical ingredients. He missed the flavours, flair and fun that he was used to in the Mexican community in his old home of the Napa Valley, so with his partner, Marianne Elliott, he set up La Boca Loca, a Mexican restaurant and bar.

The easy-to-follow lunch menu includes a selection of fresh and tasty fillers like burritos, tacos and quesadillas. You can choose from a range of fillings, and if you haven’t already gone through a fish taco infatuation, this may be the place to start. Brunch is served on the weekends and features classics like the breakfast burrito and huevos rancheros. Dinner on the other hand is a more gourmet affair where you are encouraged to share a range of plates and sides with your mates.

You don’t have to worry where your food has come from either, as La Boca Loca is a certified Conscious Consumer business, which means they use sustainably caught fish and ethically raised meat. They’re also big into recycling, eco packaging and Fairtrade, which we love.

To wash it all down there's a mix of Mexican beers and local strong-arm brews such as Parrotdog and Tuatara. If you’re lucky enough not to be driving, a flight of tequila is definitely recommended - the team specially import their own favourite organic tequila.

There’s a popular covered patio area and different divided restaurant spaces to suit your crowd. The kitchen counter and separate bar are open and inviting and are built with the bricks that divided the original businesses of Harcourt’s and Pizza Hut – definitely being put to better use where they sit today!
