Corner of Lombard and Bond Street, Te Aro

Lamason is a cosy caffeinistas’ retreat tucked away on the quiet corner of Bond and Lombard Street. There are a few nibbles to be had and the ever changing popular toasties, but it’s clear from the start this café is unashamedly focused on the art of coffee brewing.

Stepping away from the ubiquitous espresso machine, the real draw here is watching the black gold brew in front of your eyes like never before. Though there is an espresso machine, it’s far more entertaining to watch the siphon bulb do its thing, and the flavoursome results ought to strike a note with even the most discerning drinkers.

From Ethiopian Sidamo to Guatemalan Huehuetenango and Mexican Chiapas, the beans are sourced far and wide the fair trade organic way, and carefully prepared under the watchful eye of Lamason’s baristas. The staff are more than happy to demystify the brewing process as they work, and educate as to how different bean preparations influence the flavours in your cup, making for a café excursion that’s anything but your average cup of joe.
