101/103 Courtenay Place, Te Aro

You could be forgiven for thinking that little black pizzeria on Courtenay Place has always been there. Life has been kind to this one-time restroom, which has emerged from its mid-life crisis with a slick makeover to sell the ultimate convenience food by the slice.

Tommy keeps things simple with old mates like margherita and pepperoni. Five dollars will get you a significant slice of heaven cooked hot and crispy and the slightly fancier specials are also worth it for just a few cents more. You know it’s going to be good when you hear that he combines local ingredients like wild boar salami and housemade pork sausage with skills honed by making a crust with the best of them on Coney Island.

If you’re really famished but can’t stomach the idea of a whole pizza, Tommy’s meatball or Philly Cheese steak subs (inverse pizzas, really) will do the trick. Do as the Italians do and seal the deal with a double-scoop of the sweet stuff from local gelato genies Gelissimo. Theirs is gluten-free and made with organic milk, but with flavours like violet crunchie and salted caramel white chocolate, it’s not like you need an excuse.
