Adding some light and colour to the once rough-edged suburb Castlecliff, Vostinar Gallery is a beautiful display of one man’s love of shape and form. A painter as well as a ceramic artist, Ivan Vostinar has filled his bright, airy space with collections from years of hard work. It’s true you can’t miss it either, as the cacti garden Ivan has planted around the gallery gives an impressive display against the burnt orange walls and makes for a very eye catching building.

Split roughly into three sections; sculptural handbuilt art pieces, slipcast porcelain which Ivan describes as ‘design work’, and wheel work or ‘just craft’, the gallery is a fantastic display of talent whilst still remaining unpretentious. Expensive sculpture pieces are very much worth every cent, while the much more affordable ceramic mugs and bowls ensure the work remains obtainable for everyone.

The Citadel café across the road have harnessed the talents of this neighbouring artist and use his ceramic cups to serve their coffee in, while Shepard restaurant in Wellington have also commissioned Ivan to make all their dinnerware, so if things look a little familiar in this gallery, that’ll be why. As half the space is also Ivan’s studio, you can be sure you’ll see him hands deep in clay while you’re visiting, although a keen and quietly spoken art enthusiast means he’s more than happy to show you round or simply chat.
