Art meets coffee at gallery and café, Article, where an appreciation for both old and new means the crowd here is diverse in age and interests. Many years previously the building housed the production team for one of New Zealand’s oldest newspaper, The Whanganui Chronicle, and now its pages are still read within the walls over cups of tea and snippets of town gossip.

A grand communal wooden table with mismatched chairs takes up the majority of the space next to the streetside windows, meaning you’ll be enjoying your beverages in close vicinity to other Whanganui locals. There’s something powerful about sharing a table with strangers as it somehow brings everyone to the same level quickly and quietly, and it doesn’t take long before conversations are struck up over newspapers here. Customers don’t get a table number, and instead Jack, the barista and owner of the space, seems to know everyone by name. His father owns the building and frequently comes in for ‘the best coffee in town’, while Jack’s aunty uses a portion of the area as her felting studio, and offers workshops during the week when the café is closed.

Bright, light and eclectic in every sense of the word, the numerous art on the walls are by talented people Jack calls friends, adding to the sense that the whole place has had energy and good vibes breathed into it by many hardworking enthusiastic people. There’s a section of hand-picked vintage clothing too, so if you were coming in just for a long black, you best be prepared to walk out with a new jumper and/or denim jacket as well.

Open only on weekends adds to the fact that there’s something special about this place that doesn’t follow any particular set of rules, and intrigued visitors come from far and wide to check out what’s on offer. Warm, welcoming, playful and punchy, Article brings a little bit of welcome rebellion and a whole lot of excellently made coffee to the streets of Whanganui.
