On an otherwise non-descript street, you’ll know you’ve found Lucky Bar and Restaurant when you see the huge stage light and hear hints of revelry coming from inside. Squishy retro couches, glittery curtains, a mish-mash stage and dozens of hanging lanterns – this place’s charm is in its happy haphazardness.

Unapologetically Kiwi means there’s a no-fuss vibe here, instead the focus is on laid-back fun and cheeky humour, all with a side of polenta chips (truly, do try them). Once a garden centre, the building still retains some of its green-fingered aspects, with the pergola-like structure out back now a perfect space to drink some beers under. While you’re out there why not battle your dinner date at table tennis or foozeball, chuck some darts while you wait for your meal, or sit up at stage left and watch a band crank into action. From country to rock to DJ sets, it doesn’t seem to matter what genre the music is here, simply that it’s live and it’s bringing people together for a good time.

Not sticking to any particular theme gives Lucky plenty of freedom in its culinary offerings too– grilled iron steak, lamb ragu and their very own vegan dish ‘scordelia’ all take their places on the menu, while kawakawa ice cream proves a popular after dinner treat.
