Fried chicken and friends
Here are our top five fried chicken places to grab a bite to eat in Wellington.
Wellingtonians really are spoilt for choice when it comes to all things food and beverage related, with some of the country’s best restaurants, cafes and bars all within the walkable radius of the Coolest Little Capital in the World.
One of the most beloved subsections of the food scene here would have to be the various takes on classic fried chicken that have been springing up seemingly everywhere lately, with something for everyone (including those who are vegan!) to satisfy even the greatest fowl-related appetite.
Whether you’re after a spicy snack to wash down that hazy IPA following a casual drink with friends, something a bit greasy to help with the hangover the following day, or perhaps a lunchtime treat to get you out of the office, here are our top five fried chicken places to grab a bite to eat in Wellington.
The fried chicken burger at Lucky
105 Courtenay Place, Te Aro, Wellington
Probably the most well-known chicken place on this list, and for good reason. Ever since opening next door to pizza friends Tommy Millions, Lucky has been churning out damn good poultry and no doubt stealing a few hearts along the way. Each fried chicken burger is well-balanced and deceptively filling, with all the right flavours happening in all the right places across the palette. The burgers pair well with their famous gravy and chips, and there is even a halloumi alternative for vegetarians that absolutely compares to the real thing.
The vegan seitan 'chicken tenders' at Mockingbird
8 Courtenay Place, Te Aro, Wellington
Opened in late 2019 to service the capital’s plant-based and open minded omnivorous population with beautiful vegetarian and vegan ‘junk food’, these guys are bound to surprise you with just how good vegan fried chicken can taste. The seitan ‘chicken’ tenders are served with housemade kimchi, spicy BBQ sauce and sesame seeds that make for a very pleasant experience indeed, one that will leave you wanting for more.
Southern Fried Chicken at Sweet Mother’s Kitchen
5 Courtenay Place, Te Aro, Wellington
Escape the hustle and bustle of Courtney Place by ducking into Sweet Mother’s Kitchen. Settle into one of their cozy booths or find a table outside as you wait for a little red checkered basket delivering you beautiful Southern style fried chicken. It’s to die for, coated in buttermilk and fried till crunchy with a creamy slaw adding freshness to the plate.
Fried chicken burgers and wings at Soul Shack
38 Dixon Street, Wellington
Universally praised and fiercely loved by locals and visitors alike, Soul Shack certainly seems to be doing something right. Serving up chicken in the form of burgers or wings and chips, this spot might be the one for you if you enjoy a little (or a lot) spice in your life. In fact, they specialise in Nashville Hot Chicken. The hottest spice level comes with a warning that should not be ignored, it isn’t for the faint of heart . Use that knowledge wisely...
