The Danish word Lykke (leur-kah) is used to describe the state of absolute happiness. It’s also the name of a café in Frankton owned and run by Malcolm and Juliet.

Together, they have created a space that reflects their notion of Lykke to share with the people of Hamilton. Whether it be the smell of morning coffee or having loved ones gather over mouth-watering food, Lykke is a place to relax and experience happiness.

Inspiration for the idea arose from Malcolm and Juliet’s time living in Europe, where the culturally different experience of dining with friends and family was always one of absolute joy. To them, Lykke is an experience where time doesn’t matter, and in a dining sense, where every single bite of food and sip of your drink is as enjoyable as the last.

The café itself is a wee oasis of calm. The food is delicious, the coffee incredible, and the service is something special. Highlights on the menu include a Danish-style hotdog and Æbleskiver (puff pancakes served with ALL the trimmings), both inspired by traditional Danish dishes and unique to the Hamilton market. A little less traditional but nonetheless a firm favourite is the fried chicken, and even better, it’s gluten-free.

Within Lykke lies a uniquely curated retail space known as ‘Little’, because, as we know, it’s the little things that can make all the difference. Little houses a collection of gorgeous homewares and indoor plants, curated and, in the case of the plants, hand-grown, by Juliet herself. Every product is deliberately chosen to focus on supporting and sharing stunning creations from local and small businesses.

One door down is sister company Sunny Nelson Real Fruit Ice Cream, owned by family members, and so collaborations are often on the cards. In summer, venture down to take part in Friday Late Night where you can enjoy a menu of hotdogs and burgers at Lykke followed by a delicious fruit ice cream, made right in front of you.

Happiness comes from community; from the barista knowing your coffee order and watching a loved one smile. All of these things are readily found at Lykke, so we suggest you head down there and experience it for yourself.
