When Muse Art Gallery opened its doors for the first time in March 2017, there hadn’t been an art gallery in the village of Havelock North for over six years. Since then, it has earned a reputation among locals and visitors alike as the place to go to experience incredible exhibitions and as the perfect place to shop for unique items.

The main goal of Muse is to make art accessible and to inspire people.  To help achieve this aim, the design of the space was very important, and so the gallery was divided into distinct zones.

There is, of course, the main exhibition space where the work of local and national artists is showcased. Exhibitions change every 3-4 weeks, and there is always something new and exciting to come and view. The curation of the exhibition programme is incredibly considered, too, as the gallery wants to show a variety of artists, mediums and perspectives.  A unique aspect of Muse is that patrons have access to their stockroom, which is in the open space of the gallery. The storage system allows you to pull out pieces to view, and you never know what you might find.

As a part of the goal to make art accessible, there is a section dedicated to affordable art, where different budgets are catered for and which is a chance for up-and-coming artists to sell their work.

Last but certainly not least is the gift table, where the gallery stocks interesting items that you might not find anywhere else in town. Whether you are after a present for someone else or something catches your eye for yourself, don’t leave the gallery without perusing.

If you are visiting Havelock North or even if you have lived here for years, make sure you plan a visit to Muse Art Gallery, after all, experiencing art is good for the soul.
